林玉玲(Shirley Geok-lin Lim)來自馬來西亞馬六甲的一個小鎮，從小立志當作家。一九六九年，當馬來西亞政局動盪不安、排華氣燄高漲的時候，她遠離家人、赴美深造。攻讀學位期間，文化的衝擊、孤立無援的恐懼、實現自我的要求，迫使她一再搬遷。林玉玲於一九七三年獲得英美文學博士學位，現定居加州，為加州大學聖塔芭芭拉分校女性研究及英文系專任教授。林玉玲身兼學者、詩人、小說家等多重身份，已出版多本詩集Crossing the Peninsula (1980；獲頒Commonwealth Poetry Prize)、No Man's Grove (1985)、Modern Secrets (1989)、Monsoon History (1994)、what the fortune teller didn't say (1998)，散文集Another Country (1982)，短篇小說集Two Dreams (1997)，論文集Nationalism and Literature: English-Language Writing from the Philippines and Singapore (1993)、Writing South East/Asia—Against the Grain (1994)、Transnational Asia Pacific (1999)，編著論文集/文集The Forbidden Stitch (1989；獲頒American Book Award)、Approaches to Teaching Kingston's The Woman Warrior (1991)、Reading the Literatures of Asian America (1992)、One World of Literature (1992)、Power, Race and Gender in Academe (2000)、Tilting the Continent: Southeast Asian American Writing (2000) Asian American Literature: An Anthology (2000)，及長篇小說Joss and Gold (2001)。林玉玲在女性主義出版社一再請求下，於五十歲生日時完成她的回憶錄《月白的臉：一位亞裔美國人的家園回憶錄》，本書並贏得一九九六年美國書卷獎。
